Admissions

 Application Procedures for September 2016.

 Our Open Evening took place on Wednesday 20 January 2016 from 7.00pm – 9.00pm.

 Application forms were available on the evening or from the office from 15 January 2016.
 All applications were submitted to the College by 4pm on Thursday 21 January.
 Application forms must be addressed to the Principal, St. Finian’s College, Mullingar or delivered by hand.
 The first round of offers were posted out on Tuesday 26 January. Enrolment for successful applicants then takes place.

Enrolment Criteria.

 Department of Education and Skills Rules:  (Please Note)

 Secondary school students must be aged 12 on 1st January in the calendar year following the child’s entry into First Year.
  

First Year Enrolment.

 The College may accept up to a maximum of 150 first year students for the Academic Year 2016 – 2017.
 Only students who are in the final year of primary school 2015 – 2016 will be considered for enrolment as first years.
 Priority will be given to siblings of present/past pupils, children of past pupils, and children of former/present staff.
 

A maximum of ten places are reserved each year for music scholarship students.

Canvassing will disqualify.

 Should the number of applicants exceed our proposed intake, the following procedure will be adopted.   
 

 1.         Ten places will be reserved for music scholarship students.  

 2.         All siblings of present/past pupils, children of past pupils,  and children of former/present staff will be offered places.             
 3.         All remaining places will be offered to applicants, beginning with the eldest by date of birth, until all places are filled. (with due regard however, to gender balance) ie: as near as possible to 50/50 of total enrolment of boys and girls.)
 

Not withstanding the above allocation system, the Board of Management reserves discretion to allocate places in exceptional circumstances and acting in the best interest of all pupils.

 Decision Making.

Decisions will be made in relation to enrolment by the Board of Management in accordance with school policy.

 Decisions will be notified to parents within 21 days of receiving information as prescribed by the Minister under the Act. Except in very exceptional circumstances children will be enrolled on application.
 

Other Applications for Enrolment.

 St. Finian’s does not accept students enroling during the current academic year unless they are moving into the area for the first time.
 Depending on the limitations of class size and subject choice, a small number of vacancies may arise at the end of each academic year in classes other than first year. 
 Applications should be made in writing to the Principal before 1 June 2016.
 Priority will be given to siblings of present/past pupils, children of past pupils, and children of former/present full time staff.
 

All remaining places will be offered to applicants, beginning with the eldest by date of birth, until all places are filled. (with due regard however, to gender balance) ie: as near as possible to 50/50 of total enrolment of boys and girls.)
Allocation of places for the Academic Year 2016 – 2017 will be made in June 2016.
 

All applicants will be notified in writing by the 21 June 2016.

Students with Special Educational Needs.

 Applicants with special needs should note that the College will access the student’s records from their primary school/Individual Programme well in advance of entry to the school and apply to the National Educational Psychological Service and/or the Department of Education and Skills for the resources to support the student.
 

The school reserves the right to refuse enrolment to any student in exceptional cases. Such an exceptional case could include the following:

 1.            The student has special needs such that, even with additional resources available from the Department of Education and Skills, the school cannot meet such needs and/or provide the student with an appropriate education. 
                  or
 2.            In the opinion of the Board of Management, the student poses an unacceptable risk to other students, to school staff or to school property.
  

The school enrolment/admission policy will be revised and amended as needed to respond to the changing needs and circumstances of the school and the community it serves.

 The above admissions policy was ratified by the Board of Management of St. Finian’s College, Mullingar on the 13 January 2016.
