First Year Schools Football Blitz

St Finian’s first year boys began their year on Tuesday as they participated in the westmeath Offaly schools’ blitz in kinnegad. Oaklands college edenderry and st. Joseph’s rochfortbridge provided the opposition on a drizzly morning at the east westmeath venue. A fine win over edenderry on a 4-5 to 1-1 scoreline gave the Finian’s boys a confidence boost. Team captain Luke Mc Cabe was excellent between the sticks and a defensive unit led by Vlad borda, Aidan isdell, Seán Macken, jp sleator and Owen mulligan repelled any attacks by the Offaly men. Philip Reynolds and Eric Mc loughlin were dominant at midfield and a lively Finian’s attacking unit posed many problems for the overworked edenderry defence. Daniel Connaughton’s well taken early goal showed his fellow forwards the way and the industrious Roan Geraghty, the hard working Louis McGrath and Robert Standish also impressed for the mullingar side. St Finian’s second outing was against a previously unbeaten rochfortbridge side and this clash was a ding dong affair between two attacking sides. Rochfortbridge led early on despite the Trojan efforts of Ronan Greene, Eddie o Donnell and Josh l’estrange but gradually the Finian’s boys began to make inroads into a half time deficit of five points. Ronan Mc Lavin’s cleverly fisted goal and major contributions from Lucas Lozano, Gary o Donoghue helped to reduce the deficit and points from the midfield duo of Reynolds and McLoughlin ensured a deserved draw for the Finian’s boys. Well done to all 18 boys who featured.
